Arriving in Rauma, our aim was to discover the city, to meet its inhabitants and to work with them in order to realise installations coming from Rauma’s collective imagination. We have concentrated our work around fishing as a link between our knitted nets we are used to make and the fact that Rauma is one of Finland’s biggest harbour.

We have started by interviewing a lot people about their relation to Rauma and to fishing. From the answers which we have obtained, we have started to imagine installations in the city. A place where one can fish dreams, a lost treasure, a fishing net only catching strange objects, a mean to find back a person lost a long time ago,...

We have collected old sheets, plastic bags, clothes and old ropes that we have knitted in order to build these installations.
Little by little we have caught souvenirs, stories, legends and dreams in our fishing net.

Our net has then become a city map which fills itself up step by step with each encounter.

Over the course of our talks with Rauma’s inhabitants, we met a half mermaid, a mythological character with human legs and a fish legs. This figure out from the collective imagination, carries with it the cities’ stories : souvenirs, legends, whispered stories, sailors’ tales…

Of this elusive figure, everyone has a different vision.

Walking through the city, the half mermaid bring to light the hidden stories, the forgotten one, the legends. Made out of knitted scraps, installations are growing up in the streets to tell us these stories.
